Stillwater, Oklahoma has the unique distinction of being the place “where Oklahoma began,” through serving as the starting point for the land rush of 1889. The combination of a rich history and the presence of the 18,000-student Oklahoma State University creates a high tech community with a pioneering spirit. The community still has its historical downtown as the hub of economic activity and social interaction; however, recent growth is challenging this focal point through suburbanization.
We were retained to strengthen the community’s sense of place while assuring that new development patterns promote social interaction and good design. The focus of the new Comprehensive Plan and Development Code involves enhanced community linkages and gathering places and greater integration of the community and campus.
The planning process involved extensive community participation in creating a vision for the future and in identifying development objectives for implementing the vision. Even before completion, the Comprehensive Plan became a “working plan”. A number of our recommendations were implemented immediately. There is a strong sense of working together within the community facilitated by our consensus building efforts.
While working with RM Plan Group we also prepared a master plan for downtown, urban design guidelines for gateway corridors and design of public and commercial activity places for linking the community with the campus. |
